I guess that's the thing. From what I've read he's very much working in that crossover space between what's real or contrived, scripted or improvised, erotic or pornographic (if, indeed, there's any difference). A lot of the filming happened around the photo sessions he was doing for the books he put out through Taschen (publishers) and then edited up into some sort of cinematic form. I suppose the same would be true of the performers - people in and around the fashion, art, sex scene of Paris at the time; some professional, some not.
