The source quality is poor. It says 1080p but it looks like a hamfisted upscale. x265 is supposedly works well on a good source. I resized it down to 640p for safekeeping. Using x265 would just make it look washed out, I think.

Yeah, it’s an upscaled sd source, and downscaling to 720p/640p makes sense for reducing the file size. I think the washed-out look can be avoided with a low CRF and medium/slow preset, though it’ll take time or needs powerful tools.
