it's not a fake though, it's the original images upscaled so you can see?

"Upscaling" is by definition hallucinating features that aren't actually in the original image.

You are confusing two different procedures.
  • Upscalingis an enhanced interpolation. It is mathematically more advanced than cubic or splines, but not that different in nature.
    • It is what the image would have looked like, provided better cameras/lightning were present at the shooting.
    • Most of the image comes from the original:
      • If you reduce the upscaled images, you'll get the originals.
      • If you reduce lightning, you'll get the originals.
    • It's not so different to taking GIMP, Paint, PS, and ask it to resize and brighten an image.
    • (BTW, whoever knows about Bayer sensors will know that even a pic gotten directly from the camera has most of its pixels interpolated.)

  • A fake is completely different. It is creating a scene that never existed.
    • There's no way you can reduce the image and get a real one.
    • For example:
      • A image with the body of one person and the face of another.
        • That scene never existed in reality, not even with better cameras and not even with better lightning. It just never happened.
      • An image being completely generated from AI.
        • The information coming from a real image is minimal or zero at all.
