Off Topic How to get permissions for forums?

Are there different levels to the access? And can these be raised?

There was a thread that I followed, that I had access to after I contributed a bit (so there were some permissions to access the thread) - I logged in and had alerts to the thread but when I clicked it, I could no longer access it. I feel like the access level got increased maybe. The girl found out about the forum too so maybe that's why.
