i use protonvpn -- anyone use the one with opera browser? i was debating a switch there but suprised it wasnt brought up here yet

Probably because of who owns Opera. Opera got bought out 5 years ago and might have government ties.

I pretty much use NordVPN. I use a separate chrome based browser and use their plugin for just web browsing through that browser. I find that they and most VPN's aren't fast enough because well. They are trying to maximize profit. Unless you pay the ultra VPN company which doesn't exist like $50 a month.

So pretty much any VPN service that gets close to $30 per year or lower that works decently is fine.

I've used plenty. Mullvad is great. Nord sucks. HMA is also decent.
Regardless of who you use do some research on where they are operating/based, in such that they can be private (not collect certain data) then if they got asked by government for data they don't actually have any.
Nord straight up I had slow speeds and sometimes took forever to connect. Not private at all.
Also it should be said any free VPN is terrible.
For truly private can try to make your own.

I've been using Mullvad for 3 years. Some Mullvad servers are blocked on certain websites, which is a little annoying.
